PHOTOJOURNALISM WITH YOUR PHONE – FILMING STORIES
Level: Teens Beginners and Intermediate
Teens Photojournalism introduces students to visual storytelling as observation, statement or reaction and the understanding of the process involved in creating a photo story. Over the course of four days students will learn the technical side as well as being introduced to the creative side of storytelling, using it as a vehicle to establish a clear visual narrative.
Expanding from the visual storytelling format there will be lessons in spotting photographic opportunities, storyboard preparation, fly on the wall techniques, winning the subject’s trust, filming the story, editing and presenting for audience. Steve will be referencing much of his own work so students will receive a first person account of the process.
This course is designed for the Teen showing (maybe beginnings of) confidence in operating a camera and looking for practice in using those skills creatively and with focus. Our Teens Photojournalism course is part of our developing multimedia series which introduces students to the practice of expressing themselves through storytelling.
This course will also include some video editing skills to put together what the group has filmed over the week.
Who is this for?
Teens interested in a taster in photojournalism and media and communications will benefit from the exposure to both the material and working with a photojournalist and cameraman.
About the tutor
Award winning professional cameraman and editor from a broadcast television background
Steve is a professional cameraman and video technology consultant, having worked and travelled extensively with the BBC, Reuters news agency and the Financial Times for 25 years.
During that time he has also trained journalists and broadcasters in camera, sound and lighting skills – from teaching new trainees “Television Fundamentals”, to location-based news shooting and instructing print journalists on how to film with their iPhone.
It was his passion for photography that helped Steve gain access to the BBC and a career in television. He is a keen street photographer and can sometimes be seen sipping a coffee and resting his feet at the Photographers Gallery.
We are delighted to have him on board with us at The Mango Lab and he has already successfully guided some of our Teens in our first photography courses this summer.
This course can be used as a Skill for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
