This is not a stack’em high by selling it low type of workshop. Our class numbers are kept small – we only take a maximum of six people – to ensure the instructor to student ratio remains at a high standard and individual attention allows for a premium service.

The format is Saturday and/or Sunday 10am – 4pm with an hour break for a catered lunch where applicable. Our six month HotShots schedule is:

| Portfolio Jam

Hotshots June | Personal Projects + Portfolio Jam Session

Sat – Sun 10am – 4pm

Tutor: tbc

It’s a rare thing for photographers to have a sounding board for their work in progress. Online there is a presence and feedback can come in the form of emoticons, thumbs up and the occasional comment. But to dig deeper and unpack the reception and resonance behind a series or body of work is not something easy to come by. Until now. This show + tell + feedback platform is an open subject forum where photographers meet with photographers and to jam about each other’s work. Each photographer will have the opportunity to introduce and discuss in-depth their work, project or portfolio and receive feedback from the group. Whether you intend to submit to a magazine, enter a competition, begin knocking on doors for work, fund your own exhibition or build a website this is a place to get a reading for if you are on the right track or not.

HotShots January  | The Photo Essay

Sat 30 & Sun 31 January, Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Level: Intermediate

Tutor: Giorgia Tobiolo

Our guest tutor, photojournalist Giorgia Tobiolo, will guide participants through a set of briefs aimed at understanding the process of creating a photo story. Over the weekend students will learn about creating the photo essay and use it as a vehicle to establish a focused visual narrative.

Expanding from this photo essay format will be lessons in spotting photographic opportunities, storyboard preparation, fly on the wall techniques, voyeur vs. participant, winning the subject’s trust, photographing the actual shoot, editing and presenting for audience. Georgia will be reference much of her own work so students can receive a first person account of the process.

In addition to working alongside a photojournalist this is a great opportunity for those photographers who are looking to learn how to focus and build bodies of work over random shots of anything.

HotShots February | Shooting Film

Sat 27 – Sun 28 February, Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Level: Intermediate

Tutor : Karl Grupe

Film is a wonderful thing in that you don’t know what your going to get until the moment is gone. There is no immediate feedback, no screen to observe and reshoot, no unlimited amount of imagery that can be zapped from your experience. You don’t so much ’take’ a shot but ‘make’ a shot. Within the use of film there exists this feeling of photographic craft, a connection between time, light, subject mixing in the elusive and mysterious alchemy of chemistry to form negatives and in turn create positives. The weight of this, or the seriousness of it, allows the photographer to slow down, look, study, engage with the subject. Film offers the photographer a much different photographic experience and the trickle down effect to its digital cousin can adjust the way one approaches future digital creations.

From pricing to portraiture, the goal of this course is to make sure you have some core practices in place at the foundation level of your business so that it may grow successfully over the upcoming summer months.

HotShots | Street Photography in Paris

Sat 30 Apr – Sun 1 May, Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Level: Open to all levels

Tutor: Karl Grupe

New York street photographer Bruce Gilden says “if you can smell the street looking at a street photograph it is a good street photograph”. From fresh baguettes and floating scents of expensive parfum, to odd, disquieting odours rising up from the Metro, Paris has been the city of street photography since photography was welcomed and used by the public.

Hotshots returns to Paris for our annual sojourn in the city that gave us names like Erwitt, Dosineau, Cartier-Bresson, Atget, Brassai, and Lartigue. All have recorded and made famous this grand city of light. Our stay involves visits to the Montmatre, Eiffel Tower, Scare Coeur, and parks and alleyways along the way. Our purpose in Paris is to find and capture that fine art print – that image that ‘smells like Paris’.

Sections of the shoot will be produced into a portfolio series of fine art cards for the participants.

Class size: 6

Enrolment deadline: 3 April

Sat 30 April & Sun 1 May £85 (participants are responsible for own transport & accommodation)

HotShots May | Defining Photographic Style

Sat 28 May – Sun 29 May, Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Level: Intermediate

Tutor: Karl Grupe

Do you feel stuck in your photographic journey? One of the most difficult points in a photographer’s journey is defining their photographic style. We are in a culture where style distinguishes us. Think of renowned photographers – Salgado, Richardson, Parr, Bailey, Turner, Avedon – they have all established a name but more importantly they have achieved a signature style.

Our May Hotshots weekend involves:

  • a series of practice-led exercises to reveal your current personal style
  • habit breaking, what obstacles may be in the way – “getting out of stuck”
  • exploring new ideas – photographing in a new way
  • presentation – assessment – new goals

This is a very personal examination of your working methods and aesthetic look. Be prepared for honesty and self-reflection.
