UPF 2017 Theme: Cartographies
Masterclass: Here be Dragons: Mapping Holes and Bridging Lines
Run by: Francesca Catastini
How do we construct language in a personal photographic project?
This masterclass is about increasing awareness of our mental maps of the city, while we rethink and challenge our experience of the urban space. You’ll navigate London armed with an old style A-Z map, looking for “your dragons and blind spots”, as Ms. Catastini says, and taking images, notes and collecting materials. These pieces will all be assembled into a personal language in the form of new cartographies.
“Here be Dragons” refers to unexplored territories, derived from a medieval practice of putting illustrations of mythological creatures on uncharted areas of maps, Wikipedia describes. Human beings’ desire for representation drives us to want to place ourselves in relation to the knowledge of our times. We all create mental maps to orientate through our everyday – whether mind labyrinths or drawn with ghost ink. Cartography has always been more than just directions.
